Depression's Upside

New York Times wanted a grid of dark clouds for an article's opening spread where one was different. Once the clouds and grid were done for the main page (we were briefly interrupted by a fire alarm in my building) I drew a bunch of concepts for the following spot illustrations on the other pages, but we ended up going with a very simple direction instead. It was a well edited article and interesting content to work with. I didn't entirely agree with the thesis so was glad other viewpoints were represented as well to balance the perspective. It was a great honor to work with New York Times Magazine as I've been a huge fan for a long time and it's considered to be one of the best designed magazines in the world.

Thanks to for the lovely photos!
